Details
A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component lpd. The manipulation of the argument -C with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The line printer daemon (lpd) in the lpr package in multiple Linux operating systems allows local users to gain root privileges by causing sendmail to execute with arbitrary command line arguments, as demonstrated using the -C option to specify a configuration file.
The weakness was released 01/08/2000 with L0pht as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-1220 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed by Vadim Kolontsov and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1170 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (3841), Exploit-DB (325), SecurityFocus (BID 927†) and OSVDB (17207†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-15237. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
