Bubblewrap up to 0.4.0 Permission incorrect privileged apis

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Bubblewrap up to 0.4.0. Affected is an unknown code of the component Permission. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incorrect use of privileged apis vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-648. The product does not conform to the API requirements for a function call that requires extra privileges. This could allow attackers to gain privileges by causing the function to be called incorrectly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Bubblewrap (bwrap) before version 0.4.1, if installed in setuid mode and the kernel supports unprivileged user namespaces, then the `bwrap --userns2` option can be used to make the setuid process keep running as root while being traceable. This can in turn be used to gain root permissions. Note that this only affects the combination of bubblewrap in setuid mode (which is typically used when unprivileged user namespaces are not supported) and the support of unprivileged user namespaces. Known to be affected are: * Debian testing/unstable, if unprivileged user namespaces enabled (not default) * Debian buster-backports, if unprivileged user namespaces enabled (not default) * Arch if using `linux-hardened`, if unprivileged user namespaces enabled (not default) * Centos 7 flatpak COPR, if unprivileged user namespaces enabled (not default) This has been fixed in the 0.4.1 release, and all affected users should update.

The weakness was presented 03/31/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-5291 since 01/02/2020. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

Upgrading to version 0.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
