Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in UniFi Video Server up to 3.9.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Web Interface Firmware Update. The manipulation of the argument version with the input value ..\ leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The UniFi Video Server v3.9.3 and prior (for Windows 7/8/10 x64) web interface Firmware Update functionality, under certain circumstances, does not validate firmware download destinations to ensure they are within the intended destination directory tree. It accepts a request with a URL to firmware update information. If the version field contains ..\ character sequences, the destination file path to save the firmware can be manipulated to be outside the intended destination directory tree. Fixed in UniFi Video Controller v3.10.3 and newer.

The weakness was published 04/01/2020 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at community.ui.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-8144 since 01/28/2020. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be done within the local network. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
