Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.28/5.5.13/5.6.0 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file kernel/bpf/verifier.c of the component BPF Verifier. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel 5.5.0 and newer, the bpf verifier (kernel/bpf/verifier.c) did not properly restrict the register bounds for 32-bit operations, leading to out-of-bounds reads and writes in kernel memory. The vulnerability also affects the Linux 5.4 stable series, starting with v5.4.7, as the introducing commit was backported to that branch. This vulnerability was fixed in 5.6.1, 5.5.14, and 5.4.29. (issue is aka ZDI-CAN-10780)
The weakness was released 04/02/2020. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-8835 since 02/10/2020. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 250159 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2020-8835), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.29, 5.5.14 or 5.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (250159). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
