Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ISC INN 2.0/2.1/2.2/2.2.1/2.2.2. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Cancel Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument Message-ID with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in innd 2.2.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a cancel request containing a long message ID.
The weakness was released 02/06/2000 by Michal Zalewski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0472. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10436 (INN < 2.2.3 verifycancels Option Cancel Request Message Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 54001 (InterNetNews Daemon (INND) 2.X News Server Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (4615), Exploit-DB (19998), Tenable (10436), SecurityFocus (BID 1316†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-140†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
