Details
A vulnerability was found in Wagtail up to 2.7.1/2.8.0 and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Wagtail Admin Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
In Wagtail before versions 2.8.1 and 2.7.2, a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists on the page revision comparison view within the Wagtail admin interface. A user with a limited-permission editor account for the Wagtail admin could potentially craft a page revision history that, when viewed by a user with higher privileges, could perform actions with that user's credentials. The vulnerability is not exploitable by an ordinary site visitor without access to the Wagtail admin. Patched versions have been released as Wagtail 2.7.2 (for the LTS 2.7 branch) and Wagtail 2.8.1 (for the current 2.8 branch).
The weakness was presented 04/14/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-11001 since 03/30/2020. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 2.7.2 or 2.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
