The Microsoft virtual machine (VM) in Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x allows a remote attacker to read files via a malicious Java applet that escapes the Java sandbox, aka the "VM File Reading" vulnerability.

The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was shared 02/18/2000 as MS00-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0162. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
