A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0/4.0.1/5.0/5.0.1 (Web Browser). Affected is the function window.showhelp of the component HTML Help File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The window.showHelp() method in Internet Explorer 5.x does not restrict HTML help files (.chm) to be executed from the local host, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via Microsoft Networking.
The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was released 03/01/2000 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2000-0201. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
