Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Squid Web Proxy up to 4.7 (Firewall Software). This affects the function ESIExpression::Evaluate of the component ESI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in Squid through 4.7. When handling the tag esi:when when ESI is enabled, Squid calls ESIExpression::Evaluate. This function uses a fixed stack buffer to hold the expression while it's being evaluated. When processing the expression, it could either evaluate the top of the stack, or add a new member to the stack. When adding a new member, there is no check to ensure that the stack won't overflow.
The weakness was disclosed 04/15/2020. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-12519 since 06/02/2019. The exploitability is told to be easy.
