Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.2.10/2.2.12/2.2.14 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component IP Masquerading Handler. The manipulation as part of a UDP Packet leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
IP masquerading in Linux 2.2.x allows remote attackers to route UDP packets through the internal interface by modifying the external source IP address and port number to match those of an established connection.
The bug was discovered 03/27/2000. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2000 by H D Moore (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0289. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82027 (Multiple Linux Vendor 2.2.x Kernel IP Masquerading Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1187.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (4504), SecurityFocus (BID 1078†), OSVDB (1266†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7121†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
