QEMU up to 4.2.0 ATI VGA Emulation hw/display/ati-2d.c ati_2d_blt integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in QEMU up to 4.2.0. Impacted is the function ati_2d_blt of the file hw/display/ati-2d.c of the component ATI VGA Emulation. The manipulation results in integer overflow. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2020-11869. The attack must be initiated from a local position. There is no exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in QEMU up to 4.2.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected is the function ati_2d_blt of the file hw/display/ati-2d.c of the component ATI VGA Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

An integer overflow was found in QEMU 4.0.1 through 4.2.0 in the way it implemented ATI VGA emulation. This flaw occurs in the ati_2d_blt() routine in hw/display/ati-2d.c while handling MMIO write operations through the ati_mm_write() callback. A malicious guest could abuse this flaw to crash the QEMU process, resulting in a denial of service.

The weakness was shared 04/27/2020 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-11869 since 04/17/2020. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (209571). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
