Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 (Smartphone Operating System) (version now known). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Bluetooth Pseudo Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak prng vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-338. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) in a security context, but the PRNG's algorithm is not cryptographically strong. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Some Broadcom chips mishandle Bluetooth random-number generation because a low-entropy Pseudo Random Number Generator (PRNG) is used in situations where a Hardware Random Number Generator (HRNG) should have been used to prevent spoofing. This affects, for example, Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note8 devices with the BCM4361 chipset. The Samsung ID is SVE-2020-16882 (May 2020).

The weakness was shared 05/08/2020 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.samsungmobile.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-6616 since 01/08/2020. The exploitability is told to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
