A vulnerability was found in Moodle up to 3.5.11/3.6.9/3.7.5/3.8.2 (Learning Management Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SCORM Package Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. A flaw was found in Moodle versions 3.8 before 3.8.3, 3.7 before 3.7.6, 3.6 before 3.6.10, 3.5 before 3.5.12 and earlier unsupported versions. It was possible to create a SCORM package in such a way that when added to a course, it could be interacted with via web services in order to achieve remote code execution.
The weakness was published 05/21/2020 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.moodle.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-10738 since 03/20/2020. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
Upgrading to version 3.5.12, 3.6.10, 3.7.6 or 3.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
