A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 4.0/5 1.0/5 1.1.1 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function krb425_conv_principal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in krb425_conv_principal function in Kerberos 5 allows remote attackers to gain root privileges.
The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2000 by Jeffrey I. Schiller and Jim Paris as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0390. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
