Spring Cloud Config up to 2.1.8/2.2.2 spring-cloud-config-server path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Spring Cloud Config up to 2.1.8/2.2.2 (Cloud Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component spring-cloud-config-server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-23. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Spring Cloud Config, versions 2.2.x prior to 2.2.3, versions 2.1.x prior to 2.1.9, and older unsupported versions allow applications to serve arbitrary configuration files through the spring-cloud-config-server module. A malicious user, or attacker, can send a request using a specially crafted URL that can lead to a directory traversal attack.

The weakness was presented 06/02/2020 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tanzu.vmware.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-5410 since 01/03/2020. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as attacked. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 03/25/2022 with a due date of 04/15/2022:
