Linux Kernel 2.6.10 on AMD64 Segment ptrace denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.10 on AMD64 (Operating System). Affected is the function ptrace of the component Segment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The mmap function in the Linux Kernel 2.6.10 can be used to create memory maps with a start address beyond the end address, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash).

The bug was discovered 06/09/2005. The weakness was published 06/09/2005 by Alexander Nyberg with Linux Kernel Group (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1265 since 04/25/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 167 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21943 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:514)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117811 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:514)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20950), Tenable (21943), SecurityFocus (BID 13893†), OSVDB (17234†) and Secunia (SA15630†).
