LinuxTV xawtv up to 3.106 v4l-conf.c dev_open permission assignment

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in LinuxTV xawtv up to 3.106 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dev_open of the file v4l-conf.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission assignment vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-732. The product specifies permissions for a security-critical resource in a way that allows that resource to be read or modified by unintended actors. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in LinuxTV xawtv before 3.107. The function dev_open() in v4l-conf.c does not perform sufficient checks to prevent an unprivileged caller of the program from opening unintended filesystem paths. This allows a local attacker with access to the v4l-conf setuid-root program to test for the existence of arbitrary files and to trigger an open on arbitrary files with mode O_RDWR. To achieve this, relative path components need to be added to the device path, as demonstrated by a v4l-conf -c /dev/../root/.bash_history command.

The weakness was released 06/08/2020 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-13696 since 05/29/2020. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 3.107 eliminates this vulnerability.
