A vulnerability has been found in Bolt CMS up to 3.7.0 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component File Upload. The manipulation as part of a File Name leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Stored). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. In Bolt CMS before version 3.7.1, the filename of uploaded files was vulnerable to stored XSS. It is not possible to inject javascript code in the file name when creating/uploading the file. But, once created/uploaded, it can be renamed to inject the payload in it. Additionally, the measures to prevent renaming the file to disallowed filename extensions could be circumvented. This is fixed in Bolt 3.7.1.
The weakness was published 06/08/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-4041 since 12/30/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
