Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6 PNG Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the PNG image rendering component of Microsoft Internet Explorer allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PNG file.

The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was published 06/14/2005 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force as MS05-025 (Website). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1211 since 04/22/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2569 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18490 (MS05-025: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (883939)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100026 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Update Missing (MS05-025)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3689. In this case the pattern |89|PNG|0D 0A 1A 0A| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3547.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19270), Tenable (18490), SecurityFocus (BID 13941†), OSVDB (17313†) and Secunia (SA15606†).
