SGI MIPSPro Compiler 7.1/7.2.1 on IRIX Temporary File /tmp race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in SGI MIPSPro Compiler 7.1/7.2.1 on IRIX. The affected element is an unknown function of the file /tmp of the component Temporary File Handler. Such manipulation leads to race condition. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2000-0578. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SGI MIPSPro Compiler 7.1/7.2.1 on IRIX and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file /tmp of the component Temporary File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

SGI MIPSPro compilers C, C++, F77 and F90 generate temporary files in /tmp with predictable file names, which could allow local users to insert malicious contents into these files as they are being compiled by another user.

The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2000 by Jose Nazario (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-0578. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 1412†). The entry VDB-15693 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
