Details
A vulnerability was found in Python up to 3.8.3 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function IPv4Interface/IPv6Interface in the library Lib/ipaddress.py. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Lib/ipaddress.py in Python through 3.8.3 improperly computes hash values in the IPv4Interface and IPv6Interface classes, which might allow a remote attacker to cause a denial of service if an application is affected by the performance of a dictionary containing IPv4Interface or IPv6Interface objects, and this attacker can cause many dictionary entries to be created.
The weakness was shared 06/18/2020. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-14422 since 06/18/2020. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
