Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mutt and NeoMutt (Mail Client Software) (the affected version is unknown). This affects an unknown code of the component STARTTLS Handler. The manipulation as part of a Response leads to a injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Mutt before 1.14.4 and NeoMutt before 2020-06-19 have a STARTTLS buffering issue that affects IMAP, SMTP, and POP3. When a server sends a "begin TLS" response, the client reads additional data (e.g., from a man-in-the-middle attacker) and evaluates it in a TLS context, aka "response injection."
The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2020. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2020-14954 since 06/21/2020. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.
