Details
A vulnerability has been found in Squid Web Proxy up to 4.11/5.0.2 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Certificate Validation Helper. The manipulation as part of a TLS Connection leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in Squid before 4.12 and 5.x before 5.0.3. Due to use of a potentially dangerous function, Squid and the default certificate validation helper are vulnerable to a Denial of Service when opening a TLS connection to an attacker-controlled server for HTTPS. This occurs because unrecognized error values are mapped to NULL, but later code expects that each error value is mapped to a valid error string.
The weakness was released 06/30/2020 (Website). The advisory is available at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-14058 since 06/13/2020. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
