F5 BIG-IP up to 15.1.0.3 Traffic Management User Interface code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in F5 BIG-IP up to 11.6.5.1/12.1.5.1/13.1.3.3/14.1.2.5/15.1.0.3 (Firewall Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Traffic Management User Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In BIG-IP versions 15.0.0-15.1.0.3, 14.1.0-14.1.2.5, 13.1.0-13.1.3.3, 12.1.0-12.1.5.1, and 11.6.1-11.6.5.1, the Traffic Management User Interface (TMUI), also referred to as the Configuration utility, has a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in undisclosed pages.

The weakness was presented 07/01/2020 by Mikhail Klyuchnikov with Positive Technologies as K52145254 (Website). The advisory is shared at support.f5.com. The advisory contains:

F5 Product Development has assigned IDs 895525, 900757, 895981, and 895993 (BIG-IP) to this vulnerability.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-5902 since 01/06/2020. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/29/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact. The advisory points out:
This vulnerability allows for unauthenticated attackers, or authenticated users, with network access to the TMUI, through the BIG-IP management port and/or Self IPs, to execute arbitrary system commands, create or delete files, disable services, and/or execute arbitrary Java code. This vulnerability may result in complete system compromise. The BIG-IP system in Appliance mode is also vulnerable. This issue is not exposed on the data plane; only the control plane is affected.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit (wvu) in Ruby/Metasploit and been published 4 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 11/03/2021 with a due date of 05/03/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Applying the patch 11.6.5.2/12.1.5.2/13.1.3.4/14.1.2.6/15.1.0.4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.f5.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

To eliminate the ability for unauthenticated attackers to exploit this vulnerability, add a LocationMatch configuration element to httpd.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (48711). See VDB-157577, VDB-157576, VDB-157575 and VDB-157574 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
