Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in MAVLink 1.0. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Micro Air Vehicle Link (MAVLink) protocol presents no authentication mechanism on its version 1.0 (nor authorization) whichs leads to a variety of attacks including identity spoofing, unauthorized access, PITM attacks and more. According to literature, version 2.0 optionally allows for package signing which mitigates this flaw. Another source mentions that MAVLink 2.0 only provides a simple authentication system based on HMAC. This implies that the flying system overall should add the same symmetric key into all devices of network. If not the case, this may cause a security issue, that if one of the devices and its symmetric key are compromised, the whole authentication system is not reliable.
The weakness was released 07/03/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-10282 since 03/10/2020. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
