Details
A vulnerability was found in Netflix Titus and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ConstraintValidatorContext.buildConstraintViolationWithTemplate of the component Java Bean Validation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Netflix Titus, all versions prior to version v0.1.1-rc.274, uses Java Bean Validation (JSR 380) custom constraint validators. When building custom constraint violation error messages, different types of interpolation are supported, including Java EL expressions. If an attacker can inject arbitrary data in the error message template being passed to ConstraintValidatorContext.buildConstraintViolationWithTemplate() argument, they will be able to run arbitrary Java code.
The weakness was disclosed 07/14/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-9297 since 02/19/2020. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.
Upgrading to version 0.1.1-rc.274 eliminates this vulnerability.
