Details
A vulnerability was found in kramdown Gem up to 2.2.x on Ruby (Ruby Gem). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Document Handler. The manipulation of the argument template with the input value /etc/passwd leads to a injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The kramdown gem before 2.3.0 for Ruby processes the template option inside Kramdown documents by default, which allows unintended read access (such as template="/etc/passwd") or unintended embedded Ruby code execution (such as a string that begins with template="string://<%= `). NOTE: kramdown is used in Jekyll, GitLab Pages, GitHub Pages, and Thredded Forum.
The weakness was presented 07/17/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-14001 since 06/10/2020.
