A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX up to 6.5.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Telnet Daemon. The manipulation of the argument IAC-SB-TELOPT_ENVIRON as part of a Environment Variable leads to a format string vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-134. Telnetd telnet server in IRIX 5.2 through 6.1 does not properly cleans user-injected format strings, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a long RLD variable in the IAC-SB-TELOPT_ENVIRON request.
The weakness was published 10/20/2000 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0733.
