Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file hw/net/xgmac.c of the component XGMAC Ethernet Controller. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
hw/net/xgmac.c in the XGMAC Ethernet controller in QEMU before 07-20-2020 has a buffer overflow. This occurs during packet transmission and affects the highbank and midway emulated machines. A guest user or process could use this flaw to crash the QEMU process on the host, resulting in a denial of service or potential privileged code execution. This was fixed in commit 5519724a13664b43e225ca05351c60b4468e4555.
The weakness was published 07/28/2020 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-15863 since 07/21/2020. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
