Details
A vulnerability was found in Netgear R6700 1.0.4.84_10.0.58 (Wireless LAN Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Service Port 5000. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to bypass authentication on affected installations of NETGEAR R6700 V1.0.4.84_10.0.58 routers. Although authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, the existing authentication mechanism can be bypassed. The specific flaw exists within the UPnP service, which listens on TCP port 5000 by default. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length, stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-9643.
The weakness was published 07/28/2020 (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-10924 since 03/24/2020. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/29/2020).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
