Details
A vulnerability was found in snapd. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function OpenURL of the file usersession/userd/launcher.go of the component snapctl. The manipulation of the argument $XDG_DATA_DIRS as part of a Environment Variable leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
It was discovered that snapctl user-open allowed altering the $XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variable when calling the system xdg-open. OpenURL() in usersession/userd/launcher.go would alter $XDG_DATA_DIRS to append a path to a directory controlled by the calling snap. A malicious snap could exploit this to bypass intended access restrictions to control how the host system xdg-open script opens the URL and, for example, execute a script shipped with the snap without confinement. This issue did not affect Ubuntu Core systems. Fixed in snapd versions 2.45.1ubuntu0.2, 2.45.1+18.04.2 and 2.45.1+20.04.2.
The weakness was shared 07/29/2020 (Website). The advisory is available at launchpad.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-11934 since 04/20/2020.
