grub2 up to 2.04 Kernel Signature Validator signature verification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in grub2 up to 2.04. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Kernel Signature Validator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

GRUB2 fails to validate kernel signature when booted directly without shim, allowing secure boot to be bypassed. This only affects systems where the kernel signing certificate has been imported directly into the secure boot database and the GRUB image is booted directly without the use of shim. This issue affects GRUB2 version 2.04 and prior versions.

The weakness was presented 07/29/2020 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-15705 since 07/14/2020. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236631 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0026: grub2 (ALINUX3-SA-2021:0026)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236631) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0553). See VDB-159164 and VDB-159165 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
