grub2 up to 2.05 squashfs Filesystem integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in grub2 up to 2.05. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component squashfs Filesystem Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

There's an issue with grub2 in all versions before 2.06 when handling squashfs filesystems containing a symbolic link with name length of UINT32 bytes in size. The name size leads to an arithmetic overflow leading to a zero-size allocation further causing a heap-based buffer overflow with attacker controlled data.

The weakness was published 07/30/2020 as Bug 1852022 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-14309 since 06/17/2020. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236631 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0026: grub2 (ALINUX3-SA-2021:0026)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 2.06 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236631) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2022-0553). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
