AWS S3 Crypto SDK for GoLang prior V2 AES-CBC risky encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in AWS S3 Crypto SDK for GoLang and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component AES-CBC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a risky encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-327. The product uses a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm or protocol. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

A padding oracle vulnerability exists in the AWS S3 Crypto SDK for GoLang versions prior to V2. The SDK allows users to encrypt files with AES-CBC without computing a Message Authentication Code (MAC), which then allows an attacker who has write access to the target's S3 bucket and can observe whether or not an endpoint with access to the key can decrypt a file, they can reconstruct the plaintext with (on average) 128*length (plaintext) queries to the endpoint, by exploiting CBC's ability to manipulate the bytes of the next block and PKCS5 padding errors. It is recommended to update your SDK to V2 or later, and re-encrypt your files.

The weakness was published 08/11/2020 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at aws.amazon.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-8911 since 02/12/2020. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version V2 eliminates this vulnerability.
