Details
A vulnerability was found in Netgear R6700 up to 1.0.4.84_10.0.58 (Wireless LAN Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Service Port 5916. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of NETGEAR R6700 V1.0.4.84_10.0.58 routers with firmware 1.0.4.84_10.0.58. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the acsd service, which listens on TCP port 5916 by default. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the admin user. Was ZDI-CAN-9853.
The weakness was shared 08/20/2020 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.netgear.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-15635 since 07/07/2020.
