Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in NCR SelfServ ATM 05.01.00. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component APTRA XFS. The manipulation as part of a Software Update leads to a authentication bypass vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-305. The authentication algorithm is sound, but the implemented mechanism can be bypassed as the result of a separate weakness that is primary to the authentication error. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

NCR SelfServ ATMs running APTRA XFS 05.01.00 do not properly validate softare updates for the bunch note acceptor (BNA), enabling an attacker with physical access to internal ATM components to restart the host computer and execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges because while booting, the update process looks for CAB archives on removable media and executes a specific file without first validating the signature of the CAB archive.

The weakness was released 08/21/2020 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2020-10126 since 03/05/2020. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/04/2025).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
