Affected is the function peerDigestHandleReply of the file peer_digest.cc of the component Locking. The manipulation as part of a Response leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Squid before 4.13 and 5.x before 5.0.4 allows a trusted peer to perform Denial of Service by consuming all available CPU cycles during handling of a crafted Cache Digest response message. This only occurs when cache_peer is used with the cache digests feature. The problem exists because peerDigestHandleReply() livelocking in peer_digest.cc mishandles EOF.

The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2020. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2020-24606 since 08/24/2020. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
