QEMU up to 5.0.0 SM501 Display Driver hw/display/sm501.c sm501_2d_engine_write integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in QEMU up to 5.0.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sm501_2d_engine_write of the file hw/display/sm501.c of the component SM501 Display Driver. The manipulation leads to integer overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2020-12829. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in QEMU up to 5.0.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function sm501_2d_engine_write of the file hw/display/sm501.c of the component SM501 Display Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In QEMU through 5.0.0, an integer overflow was found in the SM501 display driver implementation. This flaw occurs in the COPY_AREA macro while handling MMIO write operations through the sm501_2d_engine_write() callback. A local attacker could abuse this flaw to crash the QEMU process in sm501_2d_operation() in hw/display/sm501.c on the host, resulting in a denial of service.

The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2020 (Website). The advisory is shared at usn.ubuntu.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-12829 since 05/13/2020. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/26/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (209571). The entry VDB-160360 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
