Apache Cassandra up to 4.0-beta1 RMI Registry exposure of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component RMI Registry. This manipulation causes exposure of resource. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-13946. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache Cassandra up to 2.1.21/2.2.17/3.0.21/3.11.7/4.0-beta1. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component RMI Registry. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a exposure of resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-668. The product exposes a resource to the wrong control sphere, providing unintended actors with inappropriate access to the resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Apache Cassandra, all versions prior to 2.1.22, 2.2.18, 3.0.22, 3.11.8 and 4.0-beta2, it is possible for a local attacker without access to the Apache Cassandra process or configuration files to manipulate the RMI registry to perform a man-in-the-middle attack and capture user names and passwords used to access the JMX interface. The attacker can then use these credentials to access the JMX interface and perform unauthorised operations. Users should also be aware of CVE-2019-2684, a JRE vulnerability that enables this issue to be exploited remotely.

The weakness was shared 09/01/2020 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-13946 since 06/08/2020. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 2.1.22, 2.2.18, 3.0.22, 3.11.8 or 4.0-beta2 eliminates this vulnerability.
