Details
A vulnerability was found in Symfony up to 4.4.12/5.1.4 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function CachingHttpClient of the component HttpClient. The manipulation as part of a Response leads to a improper removal of sensitive information before storage or transfer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-212. The product stores, transfers, or shares a resource that contains sensitive information, but it does not properly remove that information before the product makes the resource available to unauthorized actors. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Symfony before versions 4.4.13 and 5.1.5, the CachingHttpClient class from the HttpClient Symfony component relies on the HttpCache class to handle requests. HttpCache uses internal headers like X-Body-Eval and X-Body-File to control the restoration of cached responses. The class was initially written with surrogate caching and ESI support in mind (all HTTP calls come from a trusted backend in that scenario). But when used by CachingHttpClient and if an attacker can control the response for a request being made by the CachingHttpClient, remote code execution is possible. This has been fixed in versions 4.4.13 and 5.1.5.
The weakness was disclosed 09/02/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-15094 since 06/25/2020. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 4.4.13 or 5.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
