The manipulation of the argument hostname with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The getnameinfo function in FreeBSD 4.1.1 and earlier, and possibly other operating systems, allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service via a long DNS hostname.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2000. The weakness was released 12/11/2000 by FIRST (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2000-1066. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
