A vulnerability was found in Microsoft IIS 4.0/5.0 (Web Server). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Executable Files Parser. IIS 5.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a malformed request for an executable file whose name is appended with operating system commands, aka the "Web Server File Request Parsing" vulnerability.
The weakness was presented 12/19/2000 by Georgi Guninski with Microsoft as MS00-086 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0886. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

Applying the patch MS00-086 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3193. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1718.
