Details
A vulnerability has been found in Brotli up to 1.0.7 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Decompression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a length parameter vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-130. The product parses a formatted message or structure, but it does not handle or incorrectly handles a length field that is inconsistent with the actual length of the associated data. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
A buffer overflow exists in the Brotli library versions prior to 1.0.8 where an attacker controlling the input length of a "one-shot" decompression request to a script can trigger a crash, which happens when copying over chunks of data larger than 2 GiB. It is recommended to update your Brotli library to 1.0.8 or later. If one cannot update, we recommend to use the "streaming" API as opposed to the "one-shot" API, and impose chunk size limits.
The weakness was shared 09/15/2020 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-8927 since 02/12/2020. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
