Linux Kernel up to 5.7 Enhanced IBPB expected behavior violation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.7 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Enhanced IBPB. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a expected behavior violation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-440. A feature, API, or function does not perform according to its specification. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel before 5.8-rc1 in the implementation of the Enhanced IBPB (Indirect Branch Prediction Barrier). The IBPB mitigation will be disabled when STIBP is not available or when the Enhanced Indirect Branch Restricted Speculation (IBRS) is available. This flaw allows a local attacker to perform a Spectre V2 style attack when this configuration is active. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to confidentiality.

The weakness was presented 09/15/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-10767 since 03/20/2020. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
