Linux Kernel up to 5.9-rc3 XFS File System buffer size

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.9-rc3 and classified as problematic. The affected element is an unknown function of the component XFS File System. The manipulation leads to buffer size. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2020-14385. The attack can only be performed from a local environment. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.9-rc3 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the component XFS File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer size vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-131. The product does not correctly calculate the size to be used when allocating a buffer, which could lead to a buffer overflow. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel before 5.9-rc4. A failure of the file system metadata validator in XFS can cause an inode with a valid, user-creatable extended attribute to be flagged as corrupt. This can lead to the filesystem being shutdown, or otherwise rendered inaccessible until it is remounted, leading to a denial of service. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to system availability.

The weakness was published 09/15/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-14385 since 06/17/2020. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 5.9-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability.
