Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) in Samba 2.0.7 does not log login attempts in which the username is correct but the password is wrong, which allows remote attackers to conduct brute force password guessing attacks.
The weakness was presented 12/19/2000 by Miah as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2000-0937. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38149 (Samba SWAT Logging Failure Vulnerability).
