A vulnerability was found in Microsoft IIS 4.0/5.0 (Web Server). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component ASP Session Handler. IIS 4.0 and 5.0 .ASP pages send the same Session ID cookie for secure and insecure web sessions, which could allow remote attackers to hijack the secure web session of the user if that user moves to an insecure session, aka the "Session ID Cookie Marking" vulnerability.
The weakness was released 10/23/2000 by Ron Sires and C. Conrad Cady with ACROS Security as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at acrossecurity.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-0970. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86099 (Microsoft IIS 4.0/5.0 Session ID Cookie Marking vulnerability).
Applying the patch MS00-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
