Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in HP HP-UX 10.20/11.00 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component crontab. The manipulation of the argument -e with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
HP-UX 11.00 crontab allows local users to read arbitrary files via the -e option by creating a symlink to the target file during the crontab session, quitting the session, and reading the error messages that crontab generates.
The weakness was presented 10/23/2000 by FIRST as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2000-0972. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5410), Exploit-DB (195), SecurityFocus (BID 1845†) and OSVDB (6984†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
