urllib3 up to 1.25.8 putrequest crlf injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in urllib3 up to 1.25.8. This affects the function putrequest. The manipulation leads to crlf injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2020-26137. There is not any exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in urllib3 up to 1.25.8 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function putrequest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a crlf injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-93. The product uses CRLF (carriage return line feeds) as a special element, e.g. to separate lines or records, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CRLF sequences from inputs. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

urllib3 before 1.25.9 allows CRLF injection if the attacker controls the HTTP request method, as demonstrated by inserting CR and LF control characters in the first argument of putrequest(). NOTE: this is similar to CVE-2020-26116.

The weakness was released 09/30/2020. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-26137 since 09/29/2020. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236633 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0112: python27:2.7 (ALINUX3-SA-2022:0112)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.25.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (236633). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
