Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 (Database Software). This affects the function xp_proxiedmetadata. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The xp_proxiedmetadata function in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) does not properly restrict the length of a buffer before calling the srv_paraminfo function in the SQL Server API for Extended Stored Procedures (XP), which allows an attacker to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary commands, aka the "Extended Stored Procedure Parameter Parsing" vulnerability.
The weakness was published 01/09/2001 by Chris Anley with Microsoft as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2000-1087. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19092 (Microsoft SQL Server Patch Not Installed (MS00-092)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 452.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5622), SecurityFocus (BID 2042†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38477†).
